The crash took place in Stamford around 10:20 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31 on the northbound side, Connecticut State Police said.
An investigation found that Peter Matusiewicz, of Stamford, struck a wooden guard rail after losing control of his vehicle for an unknown reason just north of Exit 34, state police said.
Matusiewicz's 2007 Saab was then struck by a Toyota Highlander and a Nissan Rogue, which were also headed northbound, state police added.
His vehicle burst into flames after coming to rest in the right lane, police added.
The driver of the Nissan Rogue, a 36-year-old Hartford County resident, from Manchester, was transported to Stamford Hospital by Stamford EMS with complaints of leg, arm, and chest pain.
The driver of the Highlander, a 43-year-old New York City man, was not injured, police said.
Matusiewicz sustained critical injuries and died, state police said.

State Police are also asking any drivers with dashcams who were in the area at the time of the collision are asked to contact Robins.
